Deep Vein Thrombosis Symptoms and Treatment

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with out symptoms.

Deep vein thrombosis is formed due to blood clots. It can also happen if you don't move for a long time, such as after surgery or an accident.
Deep vein thrombosis can be very serious because blood clots in your veins can break loose, travel through your bloodstream and lodge in your lungs, blocking blood flow is called pulmonary embolism.

Signs and symptoms Deep vein thrombosis can include:

The red or discolored skin on the leg, leg pain, warm feeling in the affected leg.

Warning signs and symptoms of pulmonary embolism:

Coughing up blood, shortness of breath, Chest pain, feeling dizzy or fainting, Rapid pulse.

Risk factors for causing DVT:

Prolonged bed rest, Injury or surgery, paralysis, Pregnancy, Birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, overweight, Smoking, cancer treatment, Heart failure, Age, Sitting for long periods of time.
